Programme
The Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre shows off its remarkable range with this fascinating pairing of performances. The first, a gala concert of ballets from different eras; the second, one of the most moving and tear-jerking ballets in history.
Start your evening with Ballet Fantasia: seven divertissements of standalone choreographic masterpieces showcasing individual dancers’ skills. There’s no surer symbol of Russian ballet than the touching The Dying Swan, created originally for the great dancer Anna Pavlova. Diana and Actaeon Pas de Deux depicts a mythological scene from Pugni’s Esmeralda, with cunning Diana on the hunt. Two pieces from La Bayadere sparkle here: the solemn and brilliant Gamzatti and Solor Adagio and the spectacular and free Dance with Drum. Adagio resonates as a tribute to the purity, integrity and mastery of classical dance, while youth shines in Moszkowski Waltz.
The two capstones are the romantically stirring Pas de Deux of Jeanne and Philippe from the Soviet ballet The Flames of Paris movingly asserts the human right to happiness and love, and Polovtsian Dances, from Alexander Borodin's opera Prince Igor, which choreographer Mikhail Fokine considered his most important dance.
If that weren’t enough of a dramatic rollercoaster, the second half of the evening, experience the captivating "Carmen Suite," a visceral display of emotional depth the first debuted at the Bolshoi in 1967. The tragic tale of the gypsy Carmen, her soldier lover, José, and the young bullfighter who comes between them makes you contemplate love and fate in a way that will leave you spellbound.
