Brahms composed his youthful sounding Academic Festival Overture during the summer of 1880, as a gesture of gratitude to Breslau University, which had awarded him an honorary Doctorate in Philosophy. They may have hoped for a full-blown symphony, but what he delivered was certainly unique. A simply brilliant score, it contains an unmistakable element of precociousness on the part of Brahms, at the same time managing to return the respect shown to him. The Oboe Concerto in D major was one of Richard Strauss’ last works, as he was enjoying a true ‘Indian Summer’ of creativity. A U.S. Army corporal, also Principal Oboe of the Pittsburgh Symphony, initially suggested the idea to Strauss, but it was the great oboist Léon Goossens who made this concerto famous. Prokofiev composed his Symphony No. 5 in just one month towards the end of World War II. He intended it as "a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit" – also stating that “the music matured within me… it filled my soul". Indeed, this compelling modern symphony has remained one of the composer's most popular works. Thailand Cultural Centre, Main Hall
