An all-embracing European selection of music will be conducted by the RBSO’s Resident Conductor, Vanich Potavanich, ranging from German to French to Russian. Hänsel and Gretel was described by its composer, Humperdinck, as a Märchenoper (fairy-tale opera), and its magical evocation of the wondrous world of the brothers Grimm has charmed audiences ever since its warmly received Christmas debut production in 1893. Saint-Säens’ Cello Concerto No. 2 in D minor is not as universally known as his first, but is in fact even more virtuosic. Belgian cellist Camille Thomas shares her first name with the French master, and this promises to be a sparkling performance. She will also be soloist in Bruch’s Kol Nidrei. Although not Jewish himself, Bruch made an extensive study of Hebrew melodies, and incorporated two into this work. Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances is his last major composition, in which he indulges in nostalgia for the ‘old’ Russia he had previously known, including references to the ecclesiastical chants of church music.
