A fusion of great twentieth century Russian/French music contrasts the very different styles of Stravinsky and Prokofiev, Milhaud and Poulenc. However, they are all unified in this concert by their shared neo-classical style. Thai keyboard soloist Trisdee Na Patulung makes a welcome appearance with the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, in a rare performance of Poulenc’s intoxicatingly attractive Concert Champetre, a substantial work lasting some twenty-five minutes. This piece alludes to music of the Baroque period, when the harpsichord was a widespread, common instrument. Influenced by the neoclassical innovations of Stravinsky, it follows on perfectly here from the latter composer’s sparkling example of that aesthetic, Dumbarton Oaks. This was a commission from Robert Woods Bliss and Mildred Barnes Bliss, in order to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary – clearly a very happy occasion as their surname might suggest – and was premiered at their private home in Washington DC, Dumbarton Oaks. Milhaud’s The Creation of the World is the jolliest of all creation stories told through music, often borrowing from the new world of American jazz. Meanwhile, in his virtuosic Classical Symphony Prokofiev pays particular homage to Josef Haydn.
