RBSO set to honour to HM The Queen Mother

Emmanuel Ceysson, French harpist

The Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation, in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, B. Grimm Group Ltd. and the Embassy of France, will present a concert titled “Emmanuel Ceysson plays Glière’s Harp Concerto” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 9th, at the Thailand Cultural Centre. This concert will be on the auspicious occasion of Her Majesty the Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother's Birthday on August 12th, 2024.

Emmanuel Ceysson, a highly skilled harpist, challenges stereotypes associated with his instrument through his powerful and virtuoso playing. Chosen as the Los Angeles Philharmonic Harpist in 2020, he previously spent almost 15 years as Principal Harp in prestigious orchestras, including the Opéra National de Paris and the New York MET Opera Orchestra. Starting his musical journey in France, he earned unanimous admission to the Paris Conservatoire at 16 and garnered numerous international awards over a decade. Ceysson has established himself as a celebrated soloist in renowned concert venues worldwide, collaborating with esteemed orchestras and participating in major music festivals as a Recitalist in major concert venues like Carnegie Zankel Hall, Wigmore Hall, Salle Gaveau, Munich Gasteig, Wiener Konzerthaus, Hyogo Concert Hall and as Soloist with orchestras such as Bavarian Radio Orchestra, Deutsche Symphonie Orchester, RAI Orchestra Torino, Orchestre National de Lyon, PKF Prague Philharmonia.

The programme for this concert will begin with the Khon Overture “War of Solaris” by Prof. Dr. Narongrit Dhamabutra. He is a Thai National Artist who has composed several widely accepted music compositions domestically and internationally. In 2008, he was awarded Thai Contemporary Silpathorn Artist.

Ceysson will be performing the Harp Concerto in E-flat Major, Op. 74 from Reinhold Glière, a great composer of the 20th century. The harp concerto, the first work of this form in the composer's oeuvre, was performed for the first time on 23 November 1938 at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire with the State Philharmonic Orchestra. Unlike other symphonic works, this concerto features fewer instruments. The brass section is limited to four French horns, and the composer used only timpani and a triangle in the percussion group. The main theme is lyrical, with the soloist's arpeggiated chords.

Finally, with Maestro Douglas Bostock, the Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the internationally acclaimed Southwest German Chamber Orchestra and Honorary Conductor of the Argovia Philharmonic in Switzerland. The RBSO will play Sibelius’s Symphony No. 1 in E minor, Op. 39, which uses standard instrumentation but manages to create a vivid sound.  The first Symphony consists of four moments, characterised by its use of string and woodwind solos; the first movement opens with a clarinet solo over a timpani roll, and the following movements include violin, viola, and cello solos that are previously foreshadowed.

Tickets cost 600 / 1,000 / 1,800 / 2,400 / 3,000 baht (special discount for students or ages 60 above only) and available at Thaiticketmajor.
